The Governing Body

The Governing Body is a group of volunteers who focus on three core strategic functions:

  1. Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  2. Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and
  3. Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent

Our Governing Body comprises of 11 members from five categories, each are appointed in different ways and by different appointing bodies:

The Headteacher  
2 Parent Governors: Elected by other parents
1 Staff Governor: Elected by school staff
1 Local Authority Governor: Nominated by Essex County Council, but are appointed by the Governing Body
2 Foundation Governors: Appointed by the Chelmsford Diocese or take the role by virtue of the office they hold
4 Co-opted Governors: Appointed by the Governing Body

The way in which the Governing body operates is set out in a set of procedures known as the standing orders which are attached below for your information, these are reviewed and adopted annually.  The governors have a Code of Conduct which sets out expectations and commitment required from school governors in order for the governing board to properly carry out its work within the school and the community. 

The full Governing Body meets four times per year: twice in the Autumn Term, once in Spring Term and once in the Summer Term.  The dates for this academic years meetings are:

In addition to the full Governing Body meetings, every Governor is a member of at least one committee:

Resources: meets at least once a term and focusing on Finance, Personnel and Premises

Teaching and Learning: meets at least once a term and focuses on matters relating to the curriculum, pupil progress and attainment

Pay and Performance: meets twice per year to discuss staff performance and pay progression

Each of the committees has delegated functions which are detailed in the Committee Terms of Reference which are included below for your information. 

In addition to the standing committees there are a number of statutory committees and panels which are convened when necessary these include: Pupil Discipline, Staff discipline and Complaints.

Minutes are taken at all Governing Body and Committee meetings and approved at the next meeting.  Approved minutes are put on the governors noticeboard (in reception) and uploaded onto this page as soon as reasonably practical after the meeting.

Some Governors also have responsibility to monitor specific areas of school life. These include: SEN, Safeguarding, Health and Safety and Governor Training. Details of committee membership and responsibilities are detailed below.

All Governors are expected to undertake termly monitoring activities linked to either the School Improvement Plan or their specific area of responsibility.  These monitoring visits look at progress in these areas, ensuring policies are adhered to and any decisions made within the Governing Body meetings are implemented. These visits include a variety of activities, according to the area being monitored. They could include: talking to pupils or staff, looking at pupils work and displays or meeting with subject leaders.
